Backyard Barbecue
Date /
July 28th, 2022
Location /
Wa Na Wari, Seattle
Wa Na Wari art gallery and Wasat - an American Muslim-led space – have partnered on a number of community meals programmes, featuring Black and Indigenous chefs, who offer free meals to any and everyone in the community as a means of “feeding body and soul,” while offering a space for cultural exchange, security and belonging.
Cousoumeh Collective partnered with Indigenous chef Jeremy Thunderbird of Native Soul Cuisine to participate in one of these community barbecues, offering a fusion of Caribbean, Native American and soul food. This created not only a gateway to different types of cuisines, but an opening for meaningful conversations around marginalized communities and histories that are often in danger of being omitted or erased from wider conversations, revealing certain affinities between Indigenous populations and Caribbean people when it comes to displacement, cultural retention and hybridization.
